万圣节前夜来历，基本上可接受的说法是起源于爱尔兰或英伦诸地。原本的老式拼写是“Hallowe'en”，也就是“All-hallow-even”的缩写。All Hallows' Day是现在万圣节（All Saints Day）的原本写法。All-hallow-even实际上就是All Hallows' Eve。在爱尔兰人中，它也叫做“Samhain”或“Oíche Shamhna”；在威尔士人那里，它也叫做“Calan Gaeaf”；在康沃尔人那里，它也叫做“Allantide”；在马恩岛人那里，它也叫做“Hop-tu-Naa”。另外在爱尔兰某些地方，它还叫做“Pooky Night”，大约是根据一个淘气的精灵“púca”命名的……
